Inviting Family and Guests to the U.S.
During your time at the University of Denver, you may wish to invite family or friends to come visit you. For these types of visits, a B-1/B-2 visitor visa is most commonly used to visit the United States. However, citizens of certain countries may be eligible to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without obtaining a B-1/B-2 visa through the U.S. Department of State Visa Waiver Program.
ISSS does not issue letters of invitation for friends and family of DU students/faculty/staff. US Department of State has stated they do not consider letters of invitation from the host institution for this purpose. If you wish to invite a friend or family member to visit you, you can do the following:
- Write a letter to each member of your family inviting them to the U.S. on XX dates and for the purpose of your graduation/a visit/etc.
- Provide a copy of your I-20/DS 2019/H-1B Approval Notice to your family
- Provide additional status confirmation:
- Current Students: Obtain a letter from the Registrar that confirms your enrollment via this link: https://www.du.edu/registrar/transcripts-grades-records/verify-enrollment-degree
- Students on OPT: Provide a copy of your EAD and copy of your offer letter
- J-1 Scholars: Provide a copy of your affiliation/invitation letter
- H-1B Employees: Provide a copy of your offer letter and three most recent paystubs
Your family/friends can use this documentation as supporting materials when they apply for their B-1/B-2 visitor visa and to present to Customs and Border Protection upon entering the US.
