F-1 On-Campus Employment

Duration

  • Start Date
    • New F-1 students can start no more than 30 days before the beginning of the first term
    • F-1 transfer students to DU can begin after the SEVIS transfer release date 
  • End Date
    • The last day of the term in which you complete requirements for your academic program even if your I-20 has a program end date in the future
    • F-1 transfer out students who do not complete an academic program at DU can work until the SEVIS transfer out date

Location

  • On campus location and paid by DU (see Office of Student Employment)
    • NOTE: International students cannot qualify for Work Study positions
  • On-campus commercial firm, providing direct services to students and not paid by DU (ex. Sodexo or DU Bookstore)
  • Off campus location with an educational affiliation with the curriculum or continually funded research with DU and related to student's academic program*

Hours Per Week

  • 20 hours per week while school is in session. See DU Academic Calendars
    • If you take a non-summer vacation term and are required to enroll in the summer quarter, you are limited to 20 hours per week during the summer quarter.
    • If summer is the final term of enrollment, you must enroll full-time (or be approved for a reduced course load for final term of study). Thus, the summer term is not considered a vacation term and you are limited to 20 hours per week of on-campus employment.
  • More than 20 hours per week during university breaks and the annual vacation term
  • DU’s workweek starts on Monday and ends on Sunday
    • Sodexo's workweek starts on Thursday and ends on Friday. Students with jobs at Sodexo must follow the DU workweek (Monday to Sunday) and not exceed 20 hours within the DU workweek.
  • The 20-hour/week limit applies to the total number of hours worked in a single workweek among all on-campus positions: hourly student employment, Graduate Assistantships, Residents Advisors, Adjunct teaching, etc.
  • See the Graduate Bulletin for information about Graduate Assistantships and the number of hours per week

Approval

  • No specific approval needed and no update will appear in SEVIS or on I-20

J-1 On-Campus Employment

Duration

  • Start Date
    • Can start no earlier than the program start date on your DS-2019
  • End Date
    • The last day of the term in which you complete requirements for your academic program even if your DS-2019 has a program end date in the future

Location

  • Anywhere as part of a scholarship, fellowship, or assistantship
  • Any on-campus location

Approval

  • Students must receive a written employment authorization letter from their J program sponsor in advance of starting employment.
  • For students sponsored by DU: after you receive a job offer, submit the J-1 On Campus Employment Request in the ISSS Portal to be approved to work on campus.
